Throughout the academic year 1989-90, three of the most brilliant followers of Xavier Joaquim’s percussion school coincided in Albert Llanas’s harmony class: Ramón Alsina, Ramón Torramilans and Ignasi Vila. This was what motivated the composer to write Chromex, a five-piece suite for three marimbas written for the members of the newly created Mallets trio and which was within the genre they were most interested in at the time.
The composition calls for full musical complicity from the three performers, so that they become a single instrument. There are large doses of virtuosity but, above all, what stands out is the sound and visual plasticity (in live performances.)
Chromex was premiered by Mallets trio and later recorded on CD. Llanas wanted this extended recording dedicated to the memory of Xavier Joaquim.
